A number of members have not applied for registration as an Anaesthetic Technician under the Medical Sciences Council. Annual Practising Certificate application packs have started to be posted to those already registered.

For those who have not commenced the registration process please do so soon. Registration and a current APC are a legal requirement to work as an Anaesthetic Technician as of 1st April 2012.

Information about AT registration will be updated on the Medical Sciences Council and NZATS website and we encourage our members to access either site regularly. The NZATS home-page has a link to the council.

Dear All,

I am pleased to announce the Registration Examination dates for the first half of the year.

Part 1: MCQs-Will be sat on 11th Feb at 0900 hrs under strict examination conditions.

Candidates will sit this regionally, supervised by either an NZATS examiner or an NZATS appointed person.

Regions will be outlined on the application form; students will need to commit to a region on application. Exact venue details will be published on the website 2 weeks before the exam.

The candidates are all required to complete the written MCQ examination of 1.5 hour’s duration.  The candidate must attain a pass mark of 75% to proceed to Part 2 section.

Part 2: OSCES - Will be sat on the 10th March

This will be held at Wakefield Hospital, Florence Street, Newtown, Wellington

The Anaesthetic Machine used at Wakefield is Aestiva, food and drink will be provided on the day.

Due to the fact that there is a large number of candidate’s students will be given a group, which they will be randomly allocated on receipt of their application. You must stay in this group all day. You will be given a coloured hat on the day to wear so please ensure you keep it on.

  • Group 1 must arrive by 0745hrs can leave the building at 1330hrs
  • Group 2 must arrive by 1030hrs can leave the building at 1500hrs
  • Group 3 must arrive by 1300hrs can leave the building at 1730hrs

The OSCEs will consist of up to 15 stations. The candidate will move in a controlled sequence from station to station. The traditional machine check has been replaced with up to 5 machine OSCE stations with the focus on testing, checking or describing the function of a particular part of the machine. A pass in all these 5 OSCE stations is required. The other 10 stations are on general practice and could be anything from Basic life support to how to clean the anaesthetic machine. Some stations have examiners present and others are solely stations that require a written answer.

An overall pass rate of 12 out of the 15 OSCEs must be achieved.

This familiarisation service will not be accommodated on the day of the exams.

The exam committee will take no responsibility for students being unfamiliar with the venue.
